Arts and crafts nature education in Hoboken by Susan Newman Lerer at Wallace Elementary School

Special Education Art Program at Wallace Elementary School in Hoboken, NJ

I have been teaching at Wallace Elementary School in Hoboken since January 2016. I started as a substitute teacher and in the summer of 2021 was asked to teach art for Special Education students. The Wallace school asked me to continue my art classes that Fall and I have continued each term and I am looking forward to the next. My students range from pre-k to 5th grade.

I have also taught in the afterschool enrichment programs, Passport to Learning and Leap into Summer at Wallace. I have taught mixed media arts, fairytale theater, and Art Exploration for Urban Arts at Wallace.

It has been incredibly rewarding and challenging artistically. If the art projects are too simple the students will be finished in five minutes, but if they are too complex or the paper pieces are too small, they cannot complete the task. Many of my students have challenges, some physical and some behavioral, but it’s through guidance and consistency that they are learning and growing.

Below is a gallery showing some of the art projects we have done together. Some are cut paper assignments and others are using paint, cardboard, crayons, markers and much more.
